Son of Sudie Bell Warrick [Sandford] Grandson of Sarah (Sally/Sallie) Jane Hudson [Warrick] Great-Grandson of Coleman Jarred (Jart) & Mary Jane Warrick Hudson Jerry Sandford, 88, of Hampton, passed away on Tuesday, February 11, 2020. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 cherished years, Lois; his son, Philip; his parents, Harwood and Sudie Sandford, and his sister, Trudy Sandford. He is survived by his son, Jeffery, and his wife, Laura; and his grandsons Grayson and Jordan Sandford. Jerry was born on June 4, 1931, in Petersburg, Virginia. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Goldsboro, North Carolina, where he spent his formative years until graduating from high school. He then entered East Carolina University and obtained a B.S. degree in Education. While there he met and later married the girl of his dreams, Lois Simpson. At that time, and because of the Korean War, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, was sent to Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island, where he was commissioned Ensign and was assigned to the US Amphibious Force in Little Creek/Norfolk, Virginia. He served on several troop transport ships (APA), with the mission of landing military troops on foreign beaches. He considered his period of military service a special time in his life. Four years later he was honorably discharged from the Navy and moved to Hampton, where began a career in broadcasting in 1957 as an announcer at WVEC Radio. At the time there were numerous radio stations, but only two commercial television stations WVEC applied for and obtained a license for Channel 13, an ABC Network affiliate. Thus, he had the opportunity for a dual career in radio and TV. In 1959, Jerry's role at WVEC expanded when he became, "Bungles the Clown" and hosted a live afternoon show. Some may remember his scary character, Ronald, on the Friday evening show, "Shock Theatre," and the Bungles Wave. During this time he obtained a Master's Degree in Educational Supervision from the College of William and Mary, and after leaving WVEC in 1973, he returned to his educational roots when employed to direct information and publications for the Hampton School Division. He retired after 23 years as director of community relations and clerk of the Hampton School Board. However, the retirement was brief because he was asked to assist in the communications department of Newport News Public Schools for a brief period of time- that brief period turned into 11 years. Jerry and Lois were active in St. Mark's United Methodist Church; he by teaching Sunday School, and she by serving in church circles They both sponsored the youth fellowship for several years. The Outer Banks became the family's second home each summer with wonderful memories, especially for Phil and Jeff, of fun in the sun and great seafood. Jerry loved reading, classic cars, (especially convertibles), watching Masterpiece Mysteries, and working in his flower garden. He loved all kinds of flowers, but the rose was his favorite. He will be remembered for his beautiful smile and generous spirit. He never met a stranger. |

one last time before her burial. According to her death certificate, she got sick on Aug. 20, 1935, and died Aug. 27, 1935. M.A. Warrick is listed as the undertaker, which means that he buried their daughter in the L.B. Warrick Family Cemetery in Grantham, Wayne County, N.C. DEATH OF MALLIE AVERY WARRICK BY CATHY WARRICK BLOW Grandpa Mallie died on Father's Day June 17, 1945. He and all the children were wading in the river except for Merle. Trudy did not remember why Merle was not there. I have heard that he was working in Virginia. Trudy does remember that he got home before the body was recovered from the river and that he said that had he been home and with grandpa and the others he felt that he could have prevented Granpa's drowning. Trudy remembered that her mother told her that the Sheriff was going to call off the search until the next morning because it was getting close to dark. She said that her mother prayed that her brother's body would be found and not left in the river overnight. Some of the family neighbors continued to search and found his body. the search was one by 2 boats going in the same direction with a net between them that had grapple hooks attached to the bottom of the net. His nephew Jim Warrick and friend Luby Price found his body when the hook caught under Grandpa Mallie's check. Grandpa, Mammy and their children were living on the Rose Farm located on Steven's Mill Road up the field on the left just before you get to the Neuse River Bridge. Grandpa and the children were across the road and down at the river when the drowning occurred. The funeral took place on Wednesday, June 20, 1945. This was two days before my daddy's, Paul Warrick, 13th birthday. The service was in the yard and the body was moved to the yard. The delay in the funeral as Trudy recalls was that it was really hard for Mammy and the children to accept his death. It was unusually hot weather during this death and at this time embalming was not being done. Also, it was the practice of the undertaker to carry the boy to the home or to the church. Grandpa Mallie is buried in the Warrick Family Cemetery in Grantham Township. I understand the cemetery is very overgrown. I wish that it could be cleaned and fenced so that the cemetery could be preserved. |

This is a transcribed article published in the Goldsboro News-Argus after Lewis GARLICE (Garley) (Garry) Warrick was shot by his father.
Goldsboro New and Argus Wayne County, North Carolina Monday, December 13, 1926
Sad Tragedy
Louis [or Lewis] Bryant Warrick, a farmer of Grantham township, in the midst of a heated quarrel with his son Garry (Garlice, Garley) Warrick at their home late Saturday afternoon grew into a passionate rage and shot his son, the wound thus inflicted resulting the death of the latter at a local hospital shortly after midnight yesterday morning and the father is now in jail, awaiting the result of the coroner’s investigation, which was begun by the assembling a jury who viewed the remains of the dead man today, but had to defer their verdict, awaiting the examination of witnesses, which could not be secured until tomorrow, when the verdict may be expected.
Besides his parents and other near relatives the dead man, who was just rounding 25 years of age is survived by his wife, but no children.
The sad tragedy, too harrowing for words, carries its own comment as to what appalling depth of crime anger-one of the seven deadly sins noted in the Bible will drive a person. In view of the broken hearts of those affected by this awful tragedy the Argus differs from further comment.

Mallie Avery Warrick Family Mallie Avery Warrick was the youngest son of Lewis (Louis) Bryant and Sarah (Sallie) Jane Hudson Warrick. In 1924, at the age of eighteen, he married nineteen-year-old Lela Elmore Langston. To this union, they had ten children, and all but one lived to adulthood. On Friday, June 17, 1945, Mallie and some of his children went down to the Neuse River near their home to wade in the water on a hot summer day. Mallie went missing and the body wasn’t recovered until the next day. According to Trudy Sanderford, “ it was hard for Mallie’s wife and children to accept that he drowned because he was a good swimmer.” He was buried in the L.B Warrick Family Cemetery.
