John Thomas Hudson
|
John Thomas Hudson, a son of Coleman Jarred “Jart” Hudson, who had his own Homestead about a half mile east of the Hudson Manor (A), played very important role in the history and heritage of the family.
While the other children of Coleman Jarred received other kinds of properties, the youngest son, George Washington Hudson, inherited the plantation. Around about the Great Depression, due to financial difficulties, he lost all except for the Homestead Farm. His brother, John, helped to make the payments on this property. George had only about 20 to 30 acres to tend, but he was able grow hogs, cattle and chickens, vegetables, fruit, pecans and peanuts to feed his family, and perhaps make a little money. As the economy improved, with money earned from the few acres of crops and particularly from the operation of the Sawmill, George was able to buy back all of the lost lands. Sometimes, he had to pay higher than market prices, as the sellers knew he was highly motivated buyer.
Would George have been able to buy back the planation had he lost the Homestead Farm? Would the Hudson Manor (A) have been preserved by indifferent owners?
To learn more about the history of the Homestead Farm and Hudsonville, take a look at the History – Life (Homestead Farm) page. The several Hudson homes along Old Warsaw Road and Hudson Road is sometimes referred to as Hudsonville. Only two of these homes are now occupied by Hudsons.

Homesteads of Lucian and Sallie
|
John Thomas Hudson, only had to look a few hundred feet down and across what is now called Hudson Road to see the homestead of one of his sons, John Lucian Hudson. Down the road a little more, only the house of his daughter’s (Sallie Hudson Roberts) homestead still stands.
Unfortunately, only a clump of trees stands where the homestead of John Thomas Hudson existed.
Look on the History – Life (Homestead Farm) page to see a map showing the locations.

Home of Sallie Hudson Roberts and Family
|
This picture was taken in 2018.
The home of Sallie Hudson Roberts and family, in a much altered state, is the only building left on the farm homestead. Take a look at the Home of Sallie Hudson Roberts picture post on this page to see how the house has changed and to learn more about this homestead.
Off to the left you can make out the back of the second home of Sampson (Samp) Monroe Hudson Sr. and family. In the other picture, you can make out the back or his first home. Samp’s homes faced Old Warsaw Road whereas Sallie’s faced Hudson Road.

Home of Sallie Hudson Roberts
|
This picture of the original Home of Sallie Hudson Roberts and family is taken at about the same vantage as the picture on this page taken in 2018. Note the difference in the roof. Also, note the raised porch floor. There was also a pack house and other outbuildings not in the picture. Perhaps they had been torn down at the time this picture was taken. The family also made use of the old Morisey Manor building that sat a few hundred feet behind their house until it was torn down in the 1940’s or 50’s.
Off to the right you can make out the back of the house that Sampson (Samp) Monroe Hudson Sr. and family lived in before they built a new house on a new farm homestead farm closer to the Hudson Manor. Samp’s house faced Old Warsaw Road, whereas Sallie’s faces Hudson Road.

Cotton Gin Building
|
John Thomas Hudson ran a cotton gin in this renovated building in downtown Turkey, NC. A cotton gin is a machine that separates the seeds, hulls and foreign material from the cotton. The building in those days would have had the typical wood board horizontal siding. The large doorways would have been without doors. Trucks and vehicles pulling trailers would have backed in or driven through for loading and unloading. John later moved this operation to Warsaw, NC.

George and John Houses - Downtown Turkey, NC
|
John Thomas Hudson and his son-in-law, George Washington Roberts, once thought they would find it more to their liking and convenience to live in town. They built these houses near downtown Turkey, NC, about three miles from their farm homesteads. They only lived in these houses for a year or so before moving their families back to what is now called Hudson Road.

Aunt Sally was a special lady as well as my stepdad, Lucian Hudson. – Kay Merritt Hair
John Lucian Hudson, brother of Sallie Hudson Roberts.
I remember when (in 1977) Cousin Sallie called the store (Dewey Hudson Store) and asked me if anyone was hanging around that could come to her house. She said she had found Cousin George (her husband) laying in the yard and she thought he was dead. She was so calm and collected, depicting the kind of dignity that she always had. Wayne Phipps and possibly one other man went to help her. – Gary Alan Hudson

We need some help from the Hubert Hudson family for the following posts and future posts.
- We post full names and nicknames of people in the picture posts. An example of why we do this is that there are at least 5 John Hudsons in the John Thomas Hudson branch of the family tree alone. Also, as an example, there are multiple Hudsons that are called by the same nickname. So, we would like to get the John (tree) page updated for the following posts and future posts.
- We would like a better copy of the photo.
- We would like to post the why, when and where.
- Once we get these things done, we will spend some time to improve the post(s).
