Grantham Homestead in Grantham, North Carolina
Grantham Homestead in Grantham, North Carolina
The pink hue is from the way the sun was hitting the roof through the trees.
“This is a picture of the Grantham Farmhouse that I took about 2012, when the Littletons, the last Grantham descendant family to own the homestead, still lived there. It brought back many fond memories of the Thanksgiving holidays when we would travel from Pennsylvania to the Goldsboro / Grantham area to spend time with our relatives. Nothing but fond memories from late 1960’s to early 1970’s spending time with Great Aunt Dessie Grantham who lived at the farmhouse, my grandmother Sudie Grantham Jones, Uncle Ralph Grantham, Aunt Edna Francis Gossard, and of course my cousins Linda West and Vicky Gossard.” by Daniel (Dan) Grantham Jones.
This home, where Gideon and Bettie lived in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s was built by Hiram Grantham, an ancestor of Gideon as discussed in the following article.
[The below is an excerpt from History of Wayne County, by Ruth Grantham Parker]
One of Solomon’s sons was Hiram Grantham. He was born Jan 9th 1817 and married Abby Penelope Bizzel born Jan 21, 1823, the daughter of Jessie Bizzel and Abigail Jinette.
Hiram and Abby were married 1839. They had 9 children, Sarah, David, Marshall P, Hettie, Amariah, Silas, Jessie, William and Gideon, Hiram was a member of Masonic Lodge 125 from 1852 to 1872.
Hiram operated a country store at the crossroads in Grantham, known thru the years as Grantham Store. He built a fine home for the times across the road from the store which
still stands today. It was been recently purchased by David and Ann Littleton. David is great great grandson of Hiram. The home still retains much of it original beauty. [More of this except is on the history post]

History of the Grantham Family in Grantham. North Carolina
He built a fine home for the times across the road from the store which still stands today. It was been recently purchased by David and Ann Littleton. David is great-great grandson of Hiram. The home still retains much of it original beauty.
The stage coach from Fayetteville to Goldsboro stopped at Hiram’s store to feed and water the horses, and he also served meals to the passengers. Hiram was tax collector, ran the farm, a liquor still (which was legal) and a turpentine still. The upper story of the store was used as a lodge and the Methodist church. The store served as the post office.
Although the old store was burned down and replaced there remains even today a store at the crossroads still run by descendants of Solomon.
Hiram died without a will and estate was divided by 3 men appointed by the court, DH Bridges, Richard Manly and W.H. Hood. His sons and daughters were given farms, and custom of the day his wife Abby got “One Years Provision”: 12 head of fat pigs, 50 barrels of corn, 500LBs of lint cotton, 2500lbs of fodder for a total value of $300.
Abby lived at the family house until she died. Hiram died June 18 1877 and Abby died May 18 1898. Both are buried on the family farm now owned by David Littleton.
Gideon Grantham, the youngest son of Hiram, married Elizabeth [Bettie] Virginia Hudson. He was the register of deeds from 1916 until his death in 1925. His daughter Dessie than filled that position until December 1932. Dessie also taught school at Falling Creek Academy. Gideon gave land at the crossroads at Grantham for the school which up until that time was Falling Creek Academy, but was renamed Grantham School in his honor for the donation. The new school opened in 1924. It was of brick construction and remained in service until 1978 when it was replaced by a new building.
Gideon had 10 children, 4 of whom died in infancy. His only living son was a medical doctor and practiced in Oakland Ca, where his wife Marion and 3 children still live. Gideon’s girls were named Dessie, Gertie, Sudie, Alice and Edna Bryner.

Thomas (Tom) Leonard Erskine - Obiturary, June 2011
PORTLAND -- Thomas Leonard Erskine of Portland, died June 23, 2011 after a long illness. He was 72. He was born June 2, 1939, in Waterville, the son of Chauncey and Florence Erskine. He attended Winslow public schools. In high school he lettered four years in football, excelled in debate, and was President of the Maine State Student Council.
At Bowdoin (BA, cum laude), he was a Travelli Scholar and James Bowdoin Scholar, He was a member of Beta Theta Pi. After receiving his M.A. in English from the University of Kansas and PhD in English from Emory University, he began his professional career at the University of Delaware. A scholar specializing in the poetry of John Milton, Dr. Erskine developed an interest in the relationship between literature and film. While at Delaware, he established the first Modern Language Association panel on the subject and published the first of the three books he edited with colleague Jerry Barrett on short stories to film, a series published by Dickenson.
After six years at Delaware, he moved to Salisbury University in Maryland, where he served as Chair of the English Department, as Academic Dean, and as Dean of the Fulton School of Arts and Sciences during his 31-year tenure there. At Salisbury, he initiated winter courses, foreign travel courses, and started new majors. He was the founding editor of the Literature/Film Quarterly. With Dr. Connie Richards, he founded the Women Writers of Color Conference. His academic awards include three Fulbright Scholarships in universities in Jordan, Thailand, and Romania, and an International Rotary Professorship in Sri Lanka. He authored or coauthored more than a dozen books, including his last, co-authored with Dr. K Edgington, Encyclopedia of Sports Films, and published in December 2010. With his wife, Dr. Edna Quinn, he conducted travel-study courses in England, Australia, New Zealand, and Thailand. He was a member of the Salisbury, Maryland Rotary Club, served as President of the Salisbury YMCA, and was active in his faith--he was at different times, a Congregationalist, Presbyterian, Methodist, and Lutheran. Dr. Erskine and his wife retired to Portland, where he lived for the past ten years. Tom loved life. A football player in high school and college, he remained an active person who enjoyed playing tennis, racquetball, and golf, as well as games like cribbage, dominoes, and shuffleboard. He was a devoted Red Sox fan. He appreciated good food, red wine, and the company of friends. He enjoyed reading, travel, movies, theater, and all kinds of music from Opera to Country. He loved to discuss issues, to be active in his community, and more than anything, to spend time with and to support his family. Though thoroughly unpretentious, he was a remarkable individual who wanted his life to make a difference. And so it did. His caring, his great sense of humor, and his wisdom endeared him to his students, friends, and family, and made time with him meaningful and unforgettable.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years Edna Quinn of Portland, ; his first wife Sue Erskine of Salisbury, Md.; three children, Peter and his wife Kim of South Bristol, ME, Jeff and his wife Kathy of Salisbury, Md., and Jennifer of Lambertville, N.J.; six grandchildren, Chauncey, Carly, and Caleb of South Bristol, Joshua and Jacob of Salisbury, and Thomas of Lambertville; a sister, Judy and her husband Gordon, of Clermont, Fla.; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Comments about Her Granparents by Barbara Ann Orange Brand
Leon and Alice [grandparents of Barbara] both lived with us [after their children had left the nest] --- Mom got divorced when I was around two years old [1956], so Alice took care of me and my brother John when my mother went to work. I always thought of Alice as my second mother. And Leon....always sitting in a chair perfectly doing the New York Times crossword puzzle (he was a brilliant man) and expertly playing his guitar and singing in his incredible voice.....Mom said he played on the radio in NC. - Barbara Ann Orange Brand
