Billy Gene & Dog

This picture was taken circa 1942.

Billy Gene Coward is posing with his dog, Jack, on the east side of the Hudson Manor.

Notice the wood block supporting the house on the right side of the photo. Due to termite infestation David Dwight Hudson Sr. would later have to have all the wood blocks replaced with concrete blocks. He said that the bottoms of the blocks were only a little below the surface of the soil. Apparently the wood blocks were originally set directly on the ground. So the logs, which probably would have been cut with a hand crosscut saw, were cut to the precise lengths needed to keep the house level.

Pictured are Job Warrick, father of Mary Jane Hudson Warrick, and his third and last wife.

Job’s second wife, Sally Brown Warrick was the mother of Mary Jane.

Job married three sisters in succession. He had seven or eight children with each of the first two wives.

This picture was taken circa 1950.

George Washington & Mamie Ada Dudley Hudson are posing on the east side of the Hudson Manor. Casual visitors and family would use the steps and door to enter into the Bedroom/Sitting Room. The room had a bed but also furniture to accommodate guests. Guests attending an event in the Ball Room (Northwest corner of the Manor) would be accommodated in the Formal Sitting Room (Northeast corner of the Manor). In the Ball Room, family and friends would dance, play musical instruments and sing. The door would later connect The Sunroom and the Bedroom/Sitting Room. The Sunroom would be added circa 1955.

This photo was taken in October of 1958.

Ma Mamie (Mamie Ada Dudley Hudson) is visiting the tomb of her late husband, George Washington Hudson, who had been recently buried here in the Turkey Baptist Church Cemetery. He had died on August 5. His grave was later moved to rest with other members of his family at Grandview Cemetery in Clinton, NC.

Spicy Cooper Dudley (1/11/1858 – 12/31/1957) - almost 100 years.

This picture was probably taken in the 1950’s.

Spicy was the mother of Ida Dudley Hudson and Mamie Ada Dudley Hudson, two sisters who married two brothers.

World War II Soldiers (Uncropped)

This picture was taken during World War II.

Pictured from left to right are Pelmon Jart Hudson Sr. and Sampson Monroe (Samp) Hudson Sr. They are posing on the east side of the Hudson Manor.

While serving in Europe during WWII, Pelmon was assigned to help pick up and load dead bodies of humans and animals and load them onto trucks or trailers for burial. He wrote home at the end of the war saying that he was going to stay in Europe to work for a while. Upon his return home, six months later, it was learned that he had actually suffered from arthritis so badly during that time that he could not even turn over in bed. Two sisters and their mother tried to woo him into marriage as they wanted to so badly to leave war torn Europe for America.

James Daniel (Jim) Hudson also served during WWII. Elwood (Woody) Hudson later served during the Korean War.

This photo was taken by Sharon (Sherry) Ann Hudson Woodley in 1993 during the wedding reception for her sister, Melinda Jane Hudson, who married Christopher (Chris) Dixon Creech. They were married in Goldsboro, NC.
 
Norma married four times, the first time and the fourth time to William (Bill) West. The first marriage, to Bill, ended in divorce. The second marriage, to Alvin (Al) Lewis Hawkins, ended in divorce. The third husband Robert (Bob) W. Van Ness died in 1990. Bill died in 2000, and Norma in 2018.

“She told me about how they [Norma and Bill] reconnected.  I know they remarried on what would have been their 50th anniversary in a wedding chapel at Myrtle Beach.  I'm sure this is old news to the entire family.

Bill and my brother were both Merchant Seamen.  Norma, Bill, my brother and others would have breakfast at Hardee's in Clinton.  I didn't realize she knew my brother until Woody and my wedding reception.  Very small world.”  - Susan (Sue) Dilley Hudson, wife 2 of Elwood (Woody) Hudson.

“Norma invited Woody and I to her house for dinner when Bill's son and his wife were visiting from New Orleans ----- think it was in 2006.  The son and his wife talked about Hurricane Katrina----- they had been flooded.  I cannot remember their names.  The son did not know about his dad's 1st marriage to Norma.  He said he overheard a census taker ask his dad if he'd had previous marriages.  Bill said "yes" and called Norma "Kitten."
 
That was the son's first indication that his dad had an earlier marriage. She told us "Kitten" was his nickname for her from their first marriage and carried over to the second marriage. I loved the story.  She often talked about how great her marriages were to Bob and the 2nd marriage to Bill. And the gent standing there is a fine man. In recent years when I would go down to Sampson County. I would take my Dad, Wilbert Dudley who is now 98, over to visit with David. Could sit and listen to those two talk about stories and people all day. Plus, David always would call me "Pretty Boy." No one else has ever called me that. A thought just crossed my mind. Nice putting faces with names, but Travis and I had a nice chat that day we met face to face, and when I saw him commenting I was wondering about the connection. He seems to be a nice guy. Thanks for the kind words everyone. I do have fond memories of many of the Hudson family and grew up with Gary and many others. Special memories of Mr. Dewey [George Dewey Hudson Sr.], Mr. David [David Dwight Hudson Sr.], Mr. Pelmon [Pelmon Jart Hudson Sr.], Mrs. Sally [Sallie Jane Hudson Roberts], Mr. John [John Thomas Hudson] and Ms. Zilphia [Zilphia (Zilffy) Elizabeth McCullen Hudson] to name just a few. Many good folks both here and gone on. They are part of an era I consider some of the best times. Just good, honest, hardworking folks.
